Online HVAC quotes can make it easier to begin a replacement project when work and family commitments make appointments difficult. You can provide your system details, review options and ask questions on your own schedule.

What a human reviewer needs

VirHaac’s founder brings more than 20 years of HVAC installation and sales experience. Each quote receives human review. Start with your address and basic equipment information; photos are optional. We can ask for equipment labels, access details or other information later.

Existing equipment size and public property data do not, by themselves, establish the right replacement size. The recommendation depends on the home, existing system, comfort concerns and installation requirements. Significant duct changes, zoning, renovations or difficult access may require further assessment.

What to compare

Review the equipment model numbers, scope of work, permits, removal, electrical or venting changes and warranty terms. Website figures are typical installed planning ranges. Your personalized proposal is the fixed installed quote for its stated equipment and scope. Ask how additional work or changed conditions will be handled.

If you’ve recently received a quote for a new furnace or air conditioner and your first reaction was, “Why is this so expensive?” — you’re not alone.

After more than 20 years in the heating and cooling industry, we’ve seen thousands of homeowners shocked by HVAC pricing. And honestly, part of the problem is perception. Most homeowners only replace their HVAC system once every 15–20 years, so they don’t see everything that goes into a proper installation.

“Why are these quotes so different?”

“Why is one company thousands cheaper?”

“What am I actually paying for?”

Here’s what homeowners should really know before comparing HVAC quotes.

The Biggest Misconception About HVAC Pricing

One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is simply having the wrong perception of the price. Many people assume they’re just buying a furnace or air conditioner. In reality, you’re paying for:

The equipment

The installation labor

Safety requirements

Permits

Materials

Warranty coverage

System design experience

Long-term reliability

A quality HVAC installation is not just a box being swapped out. It’s a system that has to operate safely and efficiently inside your home for years.

more

A clear HVAC proposal gives you enough detail to compare options and decide at your own pace. Ask for an explanation of the recommendation, especially when you feel rushed or the total price is unclear.

Ask why replacement is recommended

Request the diagnosed problem, the repair option where appropriate and the reason a replacement is proposed. A home visit can be useful for diagnosis, sizing, ductwork or installation access. Its value depends on the project and what is assessed.

Compare the full price

Ask for equipment model numbers, installation scope, permits, removal, required modifications and exclusions. If financing is offered, compare the cash price, APR, term, fees and total payments. A monthly payment alone does not describe the total cost.

Check deadlines and safety claims

Ask what a deadline applies to and request the written terms. For a claimed safety problem, ask for the documented finding and follow the relevant professional safety guidance. You can seek another qualified assessment when practical.

Check warranties and responsibility

Distinguish manufacturer parts coverage from labor coverage. Confirm registration requirements, exclusions and whom to contact for service. Verify the installer’s licensing and insurance.

Ownership Changes in HVAC: Questions for Homeowners

HVAC companies can be independently owned or part of a larger business. Ownership alone does not establish the quality of a proposal, installation or customer service. Compare the specific equipment, work scope and service responsibility.

A documented example

On May 28, 2026, Alpine Investors and Apex Service Partners announced an agreement for a strategic minority investment from Apollo-managed funds in Apex. The announcement describes that transaction; it does not prove how any particular homeowner’s quote will be priced.

Questions to ask

Which business signs the proposal and performs the installation? Which equipment models and rated combination are included? Who handles permits, startup checks, registration and later service? What labor and manufacturer warranty terms apply? Compare those written answers across proposals.

VirHaac provides human-reviewed replacement quotes and project coordination in Southeast Michigan. One trusted local installation partner performs onsite work. Start with your home and system details; photos are optional. Displayed prices are typical installed planning ranges, and your personalized proposal supplies the fixed installed quote.

A brand name is a starting point. Compare the exact furnace, outdoor unit, indoor coil, controls and installation scope in the proposal before choosing a system.

A 2026 model-comparison checklist

1. Write down every model number. Brand families contain different capacities, efficiency levels and comfort features. A brand-wide reliability or warranty promise is not a substitute for the selected product’s terms.

2. Check the matched combination. Request the relevant AHRI-rated combination and the manufacturer’s specifications. Use the stated SEER2 cooling rating and, for heat pumps, HSPF2 and low-temperature capacity information. Older SEER numbers are not directly interchangeable with SEER2.

3. Review furnace AFUE and installation changes. Higher AFUE equipment can change venting, combustion-air and condensate requirements. Compare those costs along with the equipment price.

4. Match features to the comfort issue. Two-stage or modulating heat, blower control and thermostat compatibility can matter. They do not automatically resolve undersized ducts, poor returns or an upstairs airflow problem.

5. Read the warranty documents. Compare parts and labor separately, registration deadlines, exclusions, transfer terms and who provides covered service. Do not assume every model in a brand has the same warranty.

more

Use this checklist to keep an HVAC replacement decision manageable around a busy schedule.

Before requesting options

Write down recurring problems, recent repairs, equipment model numbers and rooms that feel uncomfortable. Age, noise or weak airflow alone does not establish that replacement is necessary. Compare diagnosis, repair cost, equipment condition and your plans for the home.

Start the request

Provide your address and system details. Photos are optional at the start; useful follow-up images can include equipment labels and installation access. A human reviewer may request more information or further assessment.

Set a planning budget

VirHaac’s typical installed planning ranges for combined furnace and AC replacement are $9,500–$11,500 for standard options, $11,500–$14,000 for higher-efficiency options and $14,000+ for premium options. These ranges are not your fixed installed quote. The personalized proposal lists the equipment and agreed work for your home.

Compare proposals

Check model numbers, capacity and matched ratings; permits and inspections; removal; duct, electrical, venting and drainage work; exclusions; parts and labor warranty terms; and who handles service. Higher efficiency does not guarantee a specific bill reduction or payback period.

Air circulation, ventilation, filtration and dehumidification serve different purposes. Moving indoor air can help distribute conditioned air, but recirculation alone does not bring in fresh outdoor air or remove excess moisture.

Filtration can reduce airborne particles that pass through a suitable filter. It cannot remove every pollutant and does not replace source control or ventilation. EPA recommends reducing pollution sources, ventilating with clean outdoor air and using filtration as a supplement.

Persistent humidity needs a separate assessment. EPA recommends keeping humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50%. A fan alone is not a dehumidifier.

For uneven temperatures, tell the reviewer which rooms are uncomfortable and when. Keep supply and return openings clear. Ask about duct layout, airflow, system sizing and the selected equipment’s fan settings before assuming replacement alone will solve the problem. Fan operation also uses electricity; results depend on the system and home.

Updated October 9, 2026. VirHaac’s online replacement quotes are reviewed and priced by a human HVAC professional with 20+ years of installation and sales experience. The online request starts the review; it is not an automated price calculator.

What the reviewer considers

Your current equipment, system location, access and installation details can affect the proposed work. Photos help show those conditions. They are optional when you start the request and can be sent later; additional information may be needed before a final quote.

Your personalized proposal

Published price ranges are typical installed planning ranges. Your written proposal provides a fixed installed quote for the selected equipment and reviewed installation scope. Review the included work, current efficiency ratings, warranty terms and installation responsibilities before deciding.

One local installation partner

VirHaac coordinates replacement installation through one local partner in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, plus Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. The proposal and follow-up explain project-specific requirements.

Updated October 9, 2026: This article originally discussed the 2025–2026 winter outlook. That season has passed. The guidance below now focuses on planning furnace replacement rather than predicting the weather.

Before deciding on replacement, discuss the system’s condition, repair history and comfort problems with a qualified professional. A replacement decision should reflect the home and equipment rather than a seasonal forecast.

Planning before a breakdown gives you time to review equipment options, installation scope, warranty terms and scheduling. Availability, pricing and energy savings depend on the project; planning does not guarantee a discount or prevent every breakdown.

VirHaac provides human-reviewed replacement quotes and coordinates installation through one local installation partner. Start the short request form with the details you have. Photos help the review but are optional when you submit and can be sent later. Additional information may be needed for a final quote.

HVAC Replacement: Installation Responsibilities to Review

Replacing a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump can involve electrical work, gas connections, venting, refrigerant handling and changes to ducts. Ask the proposed installer how the equipment will be sized, connected and checked at startup.

Permits and refrigerants

Michigan’s mechanical permit guidance describes permit requirements and exemptions. Confirm the requirements with the authority responsible for your property; do not assume every project has the same permit process.

https://www.michigan.gov/lara/bureau-list/bcc/sections/permit-section/permits/mechanical-permit-information

EPA Section 608 certification requirements apply to technicians performing covered refrigerant work. Certification is a specific refrigerant-handling requirement, not a substitute for checking other licensing, permits or project responsibilities.

Begin with the home’s comfort problem and installation requirements before choosing an HVAC system.

Size and airflow

Ask how the recommendation accounts for insulation, windows, additions, air leakage and ductwork. Square footage and the existing equipment size are useful inputs, but do not establish the correct capacity by themselves.

System type

A furnace and central AC, a heat pump or a ductless system can serve different needs. For a heat pump, compare the selected model’s capacity and efficiency at the project’s winter design temperature, electrical requirements, controls and any backup heat. Confirm whether that scope is offered for your property.

Efficiency

Compare the actual matched SEER2 cooling rating, furnace AFUE and heat-pump HSPF2 where relevant. Older SEER values are not interchangeable with SEER2. Estimate savings using existing equipment, usage, energy prices and the total upgrade cost; do not assume a quick payback.

Comfort features

Two-stage heat, blower control or zoning should address a specific need. Humidity control, filtration and ventilation are different functions. Request an explanation of what the proposed equipment will change.

If your furnace or AC needs attention during extreme weather, ask about both the replacement scope and the earliest available installation date. A proposal should make the price and scheduling terms clear.

Separate availability from price

Ask whether the equipment is in stock, whether expedited or overtime work is included and whether a proposed date is confirmed. Do not assume every company uses the same seasonal pricing policy.

Compare the actual offer

Check model numbers, required installation changes, permits, removal, warranty terms and exclusions. Ask how long the proposal remains valid and how requested changes or newly identified work are handled.

Plan before the decision becomes urgent

If you have recurring repairs or comfort problems, gather the diagnosis and compare repair with replacement while you have time. Age alone does not prove a system must be replaced. Planning gives you more time to ask questions; it does not guarantee discounts, availability or prevention of a breakdown.

VirHaac’s process

Start with your address and system details. Photos are optional. Each request receives human review, and additional information or assessment may be required. Website prices are typical installed planning ranges. Your personalized proposal provides the fixed installed quote for the equipment and stated scope, subject to its written terms.

Choose an HVAC brand by comparing equipment and support that fit your home. Start with your priorities: noise, uneven temperatures, repairs, energy use or budget.

Compare like-for-like options

Carrier, Bryant and Rheem appear among the brands described on VirHaac’s site. Compare the proposed model numbers, capacity, comfort features, compatible controls and installation requirements. Confirm availability for your project.

Ask about support

Read the specific manufacturer parts warranty and any separate labor warranty. Confirm registration requirements, exclusions and whom to contact for covered service. Brand-wide warranty summaries can omit important conditions.

Choose the complete proposal

Compare equipment, permits, removal, modifications, startup checks and written terms. A higher-priced product does not automatically solve an airflow problem.

Updated October 9, 2026. Planning a furnace replacement before a breakdown gives you time to compare the equipment, installation scope, warranties and schedule. It does not mean every older furnace should be replaced immediately. Discuss condition, repair history and comfort concerns before deciding.

Compare replacement and repair

Ask what the repair would address, what it would cost, and which problems would remain. Compare that with a written replacement proposal. System age is one consideration; it is not an automatic replacement rule.

Review operating costs carefully

Potential savings depend on the existing equipment, selected furnace, home, usage and fuel rates. Do not assume a universal payback period or a guaranteed reduction in bills. Ask for the assumptions behind any savings comparison.

Check current incentives

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Check current IRS guidance at https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/energy-efficient-home-improvement-credit. Utility programs have separate eligibility, application and funding rules; verify them before including a rebate in your budget. Seasonal discounts and installation dates should also be confirmed for your specific proposal.

An HVAC home visit can serve several purposes: diagnosing a problem, assessing installation access, reviewing ducts, gathering sizing information or presenting replacement options. Ask what the appointment will cover and what information you will receive afterward.

Before the visit

Ask whether there is a charge, how long to allow and whether the visit includes diagnosis or a replacement proposal. Gather equipment information, repair history and your comfort concerns.

During the discussion

Request the reason for the recommendation and the alternatives. Ask for model numbers, included work, permits, warranty conditions and exclusions in writing. A reported safety issue should be explained with the documented finding and appropriate next steps.

Before deciding

Review the total installed price and any financing terms. Ask what a deadline or discount applies to. You can take time to compare proposals when the situation allows; an appointment does not obligate you to approve a replacement.

Starting online with VirHaac

VirHaac’s founder has more than 20 years of installation and sales experience. Our online request lets you start with your address and system details; photos are optional.
