A 2026 model-comparison checklist

1. Write down every model number. Brand families contain different capacities, efficiency levels and comfort features. A brand-wide reliability or warranty promise is not a substitute for the selected product’s terms.

2. Check the matched combination. Request the relevant AHRI-rated combination and the manufacturer’s specifications. Use the stated SEER2 cooling rating and, for heat pumps, HSPF2 and low-temperature capacity information. Older SEER numbers are not directly interchangeable with SEER2.

3. Review furnace AFUE and installation changes. Higher AFUE equipment can change venting, combustion-air and condensate requirements. Compare those costs along with the equipment price.

4. Match features to the comfort issue. Two-stage or modulating heat, blower control and thermostat compatibility can matter. They do not automatically resolve undersized ducts, poor returns or an upstairs airflow problem.

5. Read the warranty documents. Compare parts and labor separately, registration deadlines, exclusions, transfer terms and who provides covered service. Do not assume every model in a brand has the same warranty.

6. Compare complete proposals. Include permits, removal, electrical work, venting, startup checks and any exclusions. Savings depend on existing equipment, usage, utility prices and the new system; there is no universal payback period.
