Size and airflow
Ask how the recommendation accounts for insulation, windows, additions, air leakage and ductwork. Square footage and the existing equipment size are useful inputs, but do not establish the correct capacity by themselves.
System type
A furnace and central AC, a heat pump or a ductless system can serve different needs. For a heat pump, compare the selected model’s capacity and efficiency at the project’s winter design temperature, electrical requirements, controls and any backup heat. Confirm whether that scope is offered for your property.
Efficiency
Compare the actual matched SEER2 cooling rating, furnace AFUE and heat-pump HSPF2 where relevant. Older SEER values are not interchangeable with SEER2. Estimate savings using existing equipment, usage, energy prices and the total upgrade cost; do not assume a quick payback.
Comfort features
Two-stage heat, blower control or zoning should address a specific need. Humidity control, filtration and ventilation are different functions. Request an explanation of what the proposed equipment will change.
